Continental Envisions Future With Autonomous Shuttles and Delivery Robots
Continental Urban Mobility Experience (CUbE) provides futuristic solution to the growing need of transportation of goods.
Continental is showcasing their “exciting potential for holistic delivery concepts” based on an autonomous shuttle and delivery robots at CES 2019 in Las Vegas, says Ralph Lauxmann, Head of Systems and Technology, Chasis and Safety division, Continental.
According to market estimations, the need to transport goods will outgrow the need to transport people in urban regions. Continental believes that the CUbE, a robo-taxi or pod, and a robotic delivery system is the answer. These systems will use available transport capacity and increase package delivery effectively by reducing idle times in growing megacities and residential areas. It is important to consider the e-commerce in these areas, particularly because an increase in online shoppers results in an equal increase in delivery cost per hour. Research suggests automated deliveries can assist with 80 percent of all business-to-consumer deliveries in the future.
Lauxmann says, “With the help of robot delivery, Continental’s vision for seamless mobility can extend right to your doorstep…Industrializing the automation of goods and delivery requires reliable, robust and high performing and best-cost technology – a mix perfectly reflected in automotive equivalent of automation.”
Autonomous vehicles can be used 24/7 and can expand public mass transport.
Jeremy McClain, Director of Systems & Technology, Continental North America, says, “We see great potential in our automotive technology to support robotics companies in developing autonomous delivery robots as an additional use case for driverless vehicles.”
