fleetdigest June 2017
The June 2017 issue of fleetdigest is now available online. You can flip through it here, but first, a few words from the Associate Publisher of fleetdigest, Jack Kazmierski.
Technology is a journey
Jump on board as we explore the wonderful world of the latest and greatest, together.
It’s an exciting time to be in fleet. Whether you’re looking for new vehicles to add to your fleet, searching for better ways to track existing vehicles, or simply trying to make day-to-day driving safer for your organization, new and innovative technologies are making your job easier… or so we’d like to hope.
Wrapping your mind around new technologies may be easier for the truly savvy. Many of us, however, need to take the time to study, review and analyze all the latest gadgets, apps and systems before fully appreciating what they do, and how they can change our lives, as well as the lives of our drivers.
That said, once you appreciate the possibilities, many of these new technologies suddenly fall into the must-have category. Let me explain what I mean.
I recently tried my very first Uber. I know, I’m kinda late to the party. But then again, that’s the point. Not everyone is eager to jump on the newest technologies as soon as they pop onto the scene. Uber has been around for quite some time, but only now have I made the leap into this new world.
And like I said above, now that I appreciate the possibilities, I can see why Uber is a must-have, and I can’t see myself jumping back on the taxi bandwagon-at least not when getting around my own city.
I got into a lengthy discussion with my Uber driver about another promising technology: self-driving cars. And I’ll admit that I’m not eager to see them arrive on the scene. In fact, you won’t see me lining up to be the first to own an autonomous vehicle. Like Uber, it’s going to take time to convince me that a self-driving vehicle is a must-have.
Time is of the essence
Fortunately, time is on my side. Whether it takes a year or more for me to try Uber or to embrace autonomous vehicles, nothing changes. No one is impacted by my procrastination. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for fleet managers whose decisions affect dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of others.
Should you invest in vehicles with the latest advanced braking technologies? Should you be taking advantage of the latest telematics systems to track your vehicles? And will the newest electric vehicles, or hybrids, make a difference to your fuel spend this year?
Not easy to answer, I know. And that’s only the tip of the technology iceberg. Just as you figure out the answers to the above, there will be new technologies on the horizon to think through and consider.
Fleet today is a constant learning experience. We, at fleetdigest, hope we can accompany you on this technology journey, and that we can explore the possibilities together.
