Test Drive: 2016 Jaguar XJ
I think the folks at BBC’s Top Gear put if best when they said Jaguar’s flagship XJ has been “subtly updated for 2016 with added excellence.” That “added excellence” part really hits the nail on the head.
The classic design, elegant interior, and comfortable ride get a bit of an upgrade this year. But then again, how does one improve a vehicle that’s already benchmark of luxury?
The XJ comes in two lengths – long and really long. Jaguar also offers an impressive performance version equipped with a Supercharged 5.0L V8 that pumps out a neck-snapping 550 hp and 502 lb. ft. of torque that peaks at a mere 2,500 rpm.
As the “L” in the name implies, our test vehicles, the XJL was the long wheelbase version of the XJ, equipped with a robust Supercharged 3.0L V6 worthy of 340 hp and 332 lb. ft. of torque. Coupled to an 8-speed automatic, it was eager to accelerate and a delight to pilot.
The Advanced Dynamics system, which monitors the car at a rate of 500 times a second, works in harmony with the air suspension system to provide a truly refined ride. Adding to the comfort and luxury of the ride is the fact that rear seat passengers get almost a full metre of leg room – enough for even the tallest, and most demanding passengers.
The XJ also boasts a top-notch sound system, and upgraded electronics. An 8-inch touchscreen has a customizable home screen, and can be controlled with multi-touch gestures. In place of a traditional instrument cluster, Jaguar employs a 12.3-inch screen that can be customized to display a variety of virtual dials and other information. In fact, the entire display can be turned into a 3D map, allowing the driver to navigate with all map data right in front of him.
The advanced InControl Connect Pro system allows you to access a variety of apps,
including an app that allows you to control your Jaguar with a smartphone. That means drivers can remote start the car, set the climate control, lock and unlock the vehicles, and even locate their vehicle on a map.
The XJ may not be a volume seller, and it may not be as popular as some of
the competition, but for 2016 there’s more to love about this sophisticated sedan than every
