Michelin will be launching RFID-equipped tires in time for the 2012 London Olympics. By combining the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and Radio Frequency Identification chips (RFID) into Michelin’s X InCity tires, the company has created an electronic link from the tire to a data processing system.
With this innovative “communicating” tire, an operator simply walks by the vehicle with an electronic reader that gathers all relevant data about each individual tire. This enables operators not only to carry out controls more frequently and efficiently but also to ensure flawless traceability as to the tire’s history, thanks to the RFID chip.
To develop this technology, Michelin spent 7 years on research, filed around 20 patent families and drove some 50,000 tires a total of 6 billion kilometers in tests conducted around the world.
