Porsche to Offer Lithium-ion Batteries

If you think that lithium-ion batteries are destined only for electric or hybrid vehicles, think again! Indeed, German auto maker Porsche will begin to offer, starting this January, a new smaller lithium-ion battery as an option for the starter of its new Porsche Boxster Spyder and 911 GT3 and GT3 RS. This pretty expensive battery (approximately $1,700) will weigh nine pounds less than a standard lead-acid battery. But the manufacturer warns its customers that its power might be diminished by temperatures below the freezing point. (ED)
