Thursday, September 03, 2009 Switch Out Needs Collision Repairers
Switch Out is a national program designed to remove and collect mercury-containing switches from convenience lighting and ABS sensor modules in end-of-life vehicles before they are flattened, shredded, and recycled into new steel. Through the work of automotive recyclers and dismantlers, Switch Out has collected over 300,931 switches, which translates to approximately 256 kg of mercury. Just one gram of mercury is enough to contaminate an 8 hectare lake to the point where the fish are inedible. The program is working in partnership with the Automotive Recyclers of Canada and the Canadian Association of Recycling Industries to expand across Canada. There is an opportunity for collision repairers to make a difference and participate in this no cost program. For more information, visit www.switchout.ca. (LB)
