HR Issues & You

My Dad who has been retired for 15 years now, said to me, “If I had to start in business again under today’s conditions, I don’t think I would.”  That’s quite a statement from a very successful businessman for over 40 years of his career to be intimidated by today’s environment. No small part of what he sees as challenges for you today are the hoops you have to jump through as an employer.

It is so true that there are more forms, administration duties and risks associated with hiring people.  What would happen if you didn’t take on those challenges?  Very simply you would not be able to accomplish your goals and dreams.  That’s what is at stake when we are dealing with HR issues - your dreams and aspirations.  So, it is imperative that you learn much about HR and follow the rules to the letter.

I am not saying that you must become an expert, because that is not true.  There are many introductory style courses available on-line (link for you www.elearners.com/courses/human-resources.htm).  Many universities have courses that are more advanced but some are introductory in nature (Ryerson link:www.ryerson.ca or another link: www.tru.ca/distance/courses/admn222.html)

You can also hire companies that can supply great HR help on an outsource basis so that you can have the benefits of a big department behind you without the costs (do a Google search: hr companies).

There are organizations that can help you gain a basic knowledge such as the American Society of Training & Development (link: www.astd.org) or the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations (link: www.cchra.ca). There are newsletters that can help to inform you (link: www.canadianhrpress.ca).

So, there is lots of help available formally and even informally through networks of peers and friends in the industry.  Most I know would be happy to lend you the benefit of their experiences if you just ask.
